BRAINYMEM project: emergent pollutants removal in purified water

The research project led by ACCIONA Water, supported and funded by the European Comission is part of the European LIFE + focused on research on the elimination of the so-called emerging contaminants: remains of compounds such as pesticides, medications or chemical waste, which are not effectively removed with conventional purifying treatments.

BRAINYMEM also aims to increasingly reduce energy consumption in waste water treatment plants by applying advanced control systems, allowing for up to 25% less consumption

The associated greenhouse gases emission (NOx and CO2) reduction due to the decrease in the aeration of the system has been estimated in 4.3 kgCO2 equivalents per cubic meter of treated water.

Results obtained so far shows an overall savings of 20% with the aeration control system (biological and membrane).
