ACCIONA Energía is promoting the research, development and testing of new technologies, with the aim, on the one hand, of acquiring greater knowledge on the use of the space by birds, and also trialling different systems and measures aimed at the prevention and/or correction of the impact on birds and bats of wind farms.
Different technologies are being used in the field of increasing knowledge:
- Radar system: This is an effective tool that detects the presence of birds. It is of great use in determining migration routes, and enables greater precision and time for decision-making in risk situations.
- Bat detectors: Bat populations have been studied using ultrasound detectors. This information is useful in estimating and assessing the potential risk of collision and learning about the behaviour of this species.
- Ultrasound emitter: This is a system which enables the generation of ultrasounds at different frequencies. It emits signals which are audible to bats, driving them away and thus avoiding their presence in the vicinity of turbines.
- Experimental bird protection system: This is a monitoring system comprising high resolution cameras which analyses images to detect the presence of birds, estimate the risk of collision and respond to dangerous situations by emitting an audible signal that drives birds away.
