NEW ECOSYSTEM USING RENEWABLE ENERGIES: WETLAND

ACCIONA in collaboration with the Foundation for Research in Ethology and Biodiversity (FIEB in spanish), have generated a new riverbank ecosystem by creating a wetland  and planting over 400 native trees. The setting, originally a riverside wood, was also restored and its environment improved in a project carried out in combination with La Caixa Foundation. This project has allowed the restoration of the degraded area of Toledo, now birds refuge, among which stand out mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), grey heron (Ardea cinerea), common stilt (Himantopus himantopus) and kentish plover (Charadrius alexandrinus), reptiles such as the viperine snake (Natrix maura) and amphibians such as natterjack toad (Epidalea calamita) and perez's frog (Pelophylax perezi). The project, has  achieved the restoration of more than 10.000 m2, whereof 500 m2 are a lagoon  and a repopulated forest with 350 native trees like  ashes and poplars. 

The project represents a novel combination of environmental improvement and use of renewable energies. In itself, the wetland forms an ecological closed circuit, consuming only energy generated by the sun, as the water is extracted from a nearby well by solar panels and is filtered through deep layers to return to the same aquifer.
