Environmental risk identification and management, coordinated by a multi-discipline work team for the entire Group, includes risks associated with climate change, guaranteeing coherence with ACCIONA's Global Risk Policy. It also establishes the acceptable tolerance level, which allows for the most suitable prevention and reduction measures to be taken.
The Company helps offset the use of fossil energy in the national electricity mixes, thereby successfully avoiding all CO₂ emissions associated with them through its electricity generation activity based exclusively on renewable energy. In the same way, ACCIONA provides solutions for energy efficiency, both in its own business and for its customers, successfully optimising consumption patterns in which CO2 emissions are reduced.
ACCIONA calculates the total of the emissions of its supply chain following the guidelines contained on the Corporate Value Chain, Accounting and Reporting Standard published by Green House Gas Protocol Initiative, the WRI and the WBCSD.
The company carries out since 2014 an ambitious project that calculates greenhouse gas emissions associated to the activities of its all suppliers, and it is one of the first companies in the world to analyse the emissions of 100% of its supply chain. The methodology enables the calculation of not only the emissions derived from the direct relationship between ACCIONA and its suppliers, but also for its entire value chain.
The joint analysis of these data allows ACCIONA to know in which measure the current business trends and opening of new geographic markets are influencing the variation of CO2 emissions of suppliers, identify which suppliers are having greatest emission impact, and which ones persist in time within this category, identify which purchase activities are the most carbon intensive and discern which countries represent greatest risk with regards to climate change within the supply chain.
100% of the electrical energy supplied by ACCIONA is generated without emitting carbon. For this reason, the Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has given it a "Level A" in CO2 emissions, equivalent to zero emissions.
ACCIONA has reduced 61% its energy consumption since 2007. Learn more about ACCIONA's plan to reduce energy consumption in all businesses.
ACCIONA actively participates in the implementation of projects associated with the fight against climate change in developing and emerging countries, supporting the transfer to clean technologies through Clean Development Mechanisms (CDMs).
