Opening of Australia’s Mundaring Water Treatment Plant, One of ACCIONA’s Finest Accomplishments in Water Treatment

The Mundaring Water Treatment Plant was officially opened by Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett. The project, worth 300 million Australian dollars (roughly 200 million euros), is in the hands of Helena Water, a consortium made up of ACCIONA Agua, Trility (a Mitsubishi Corporation subsidiary) and an investment fund of Lloyds Bank. Helena Water was selected to design the facility, build it and run it under a 35-year concession. The plant is located in the Perth area.

The plant will supply Western Australia's Goldfield and Agricultural Water System (G&AWS) and is the first water infrastructure project of its description to be organized as a public-private partnership. Its initial capacity will be 165 million litres a day, and its maximum, 240 million litres a day. The Mundaring plant will become the main source of water for 100,000 people, although it is prepared to cover the demands of a larger population in future.

"The Goldfields and Agricultural Water Supply Scheme has been at the forefront of innovation ever since its creation in 1890," affirmed Helena Water Chairman François Gouws, who praised the Western Australian government for its involvement in the project.

In 2012 the plant earned recognition in the category of Best Contract of the Year at the awards given out by Global Water Intelligence, the most prestigious international water market publication. Mundaring received a distinction in the Best Contract of the Year category in recognition of its contribution to the international progress of the public-private partnership scheme in the water sector. This is ACCIONA's first project in Western Australia, so it marks a new milestone in the consolidation of the company in Australia.

This project is consolidating the presence of ACCIONA Agua in Australia and enabling it to expand its business spectrum to include water treatment. In addition to this plant, ACCIONA Agua is a partner in AdelaideAqua, the consortium that built the desalination plant that has been in operation in Adelaide, South Australia, since December 2012.
