ACCIONA endorses the Trillion Tonne Communiqué to prevent the cumulative emission of more than a trillion tonnes of carbon

04/15/2014

The Communiqué calls for a "rapid and focused response" from governments to the threat posed by rising global carbon emissions, and the "disruptive climate impacts" inevitably associated with them.

The Trillion Tonne Communiqué, coordinated by The Prince of Wales's Corporate Leaders Group, has so far been signed by more than 90 companies from 5 continents, including major multinationals like ACCIONA, Adidas, EDF Energy, ING, Mar , TetraPak, and Unilever.

According to the Communiqué, governments must implement policies to prevent accumulating more than a billion tonnes of carbon in emissions,  since failure to limit the levels of carbon in the atmosphere would pose a risk of increasingly serious climate impacts.

Specifically the Communiqué calls on governments to:

  • Set a timeline for achieving net zero emissions before the end of the century
  • Design a credible strategy for transforming the energy system
  • Create a plan to manage reliance on fossil fuels, especially coal

The Trillion Tonne Communiqué is the seventh in a series coordinated by the Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change, an organization which brings together 30 European companies. ACCIONA is the only Spanish company in the Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change. As an active member since 2009, it collaborates in the development of Communiqués while endorsing its position to promote measures to help in the fight against climate change.
