09/22/2011

Carmen Becerril, President of ACCIONA Energy,  participated on behalf of ACCIONA in a roundtable at the United Nations Private Sector Forum 2011, a forum that defined the role of the private sector in support of the "Sustainable Energy for All" strategy promoted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The aim of this strategy is to unite the efforts of governments, the private sector and civil society partners to achieve three major goals by 2030:

  • Achieving universal access to modern energy services.
  • Improving energy efficiency by 40%.
  • Increasing the share of energy generated from renewable resources around the world to 30%.

The following are the objectives for the Forum:

  • To galvanise support for the strategy on "Sustainable Energy for All"
  • To create a shared understanding of the role of the private sector in achieving sustainable energy for all
  • To provide a platform for companies, investors, Governments, foundations and civil society organizations to share efforts and commitments
  • To inspire new forms of public-private partnership to overcome challenges at local level

The Private Sector Forum hosted five roundtable discussions, covering the following issues: access to electricity; access to clean energies; renewable energies; energy efficiency; and water, food and energy security.

Carmen Becerril participated in the roundtable discussion on "Renewable Energies", where she expressed ACCIONA's commitment to providing access to basic electricity through renewable sources to rural communities isolated from the traditional grid, in developing economies/countries. This commitment is based on an innovative model of public-private partnership and includes the commitment to work with local and national governments to promote a favourable framework for the renewable energy supply, as well as to develop local renewable energy supplies in isolated rural communities.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2012 as the "International Year for Sustainable Energy for All". Universal access is one of the key areas at the high-level summit Rio+20, to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June of next year.
