The cruise liner Mein Shiff 3, one of the biggest in the world with capacity for 2,500 passengers and 1,000 crew, was the first to inaugurate the new cruise ship pier in Puerto del Rosario, on the island of Fuerteventura (Canary Islands). It was extended by ACCIONA by applying a world-first technique based on the use of caissons made of composite materials that are more resistant and environment-friendly. They also reduce C02 emissions arising from their construction by 75% and minimize the need to carry out maintenance work, extending their working life. Puerto del Rosario will be able to simultaneously accommodate two medium-sized cruise liners or one big ship with a length of over 300 meters, which is the case of the Mein Shiff 3 (until now the maximum length was 275 meters). The innovative construction technique used in the pier extension led to ACCIONA receiving the European Environment Prize awarded by the European Commission (Spanish section) under the ‘Product and/or service for sustainable development’ category.
