ACCIONA Trasmediterránea plans to set up a new cargo and passenger link between Barcelona and Tánger Med and the French port of Sete.
The new Barcelona Ferry Terminal -the Port of Barcelona's largest cargo and passenger facility-, which will be run as a concession by ACCIONA Trasmediterránea until 2029, was officially opened today in Barcelona. The opening was attended by a number of high-ranking officials, such as the Deputy Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi William Carnes; the Director General of Road Transport of the Barcelona Catalonian Regional Government, Manuel Villalante; and the Chairman of the Barcelona Port Authority, Jordi Valls, who took part in the ceremony along with the Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACCIONA Trasmediterránea, Jorge Vega-Penichet and the Area General Manager of Trasmediterránea, Antonio Grávalos.
ACCIONA Trasmediterranea has spent 36 million euros on upgrading and adapting the 150,000m2 Ferry Terminal. The facility has 1,077 metres of mooring dock (for a maximum five vessels simultaneously), a maritime station, vehicle parking facilities and machinery for merchandise handling. In 2008, ACCIONA Trasmediterranea managed at the Port of Barcelona 1,924 vessel connections; 863,257 passengers and 173,000 passenger-driven vehicles; four million linear metres of cargo and 100,000 new vehicles.
The Barcelona Ferry Terminal also gives service to other companies, including the Italian shipping lines GNV and Grimaldi Lines and the Algerian line ENTMV. ACCIONA Trasmediterránea also has plans to add new destinations from Barcelona and is looking at developing a new cargo and passenger link between Barcelona, Tanger Med and the French port of Sete. The planned link will join the existing links between Barcelona and the Balearic Isles, the Canaries and Morocco.
