ACCIONA is among the 54 international companies that met with UN Secretary General Ban KI-moon for the launch of LEAD, a new platform set up by the UN Global Compact aimed at reaching new levels of environmental, social and governance performance and establishing a new benchmark in corporate sustainability.

The participating companies commit to work towards implementing the Blueprint for Corporate Sustainability Leadership, a comprehensive road map comprising 50 actions for achieving long-term sustainability. The Blueprint was introduced initially in the Global Compact in 2010.

The companies taking part are also expected to share their knowledge across local networks present in more than 90 countries and to report regularly on their activities. Moreover, they pledge to work more actively with UN agencies towards a search for solutions to the world's major challenges.

"From the outset, the Global Compact has been driven by business leaders who have been willing to go beyond the status quo", said the UN Secretary General in his address to the Group. "Through the Global Compact LEAD, you can all help to open the door towards the levels of sustainability performance that the world is demanding from the corporate world".

"The launch of the Global Compact LEAD underlines the important role played by the Global Compact's main participants in the worldwide advance of corporate responsibility", said the Executive Director of the Global Compact, Georg Kell. "At the same time, Global Compact LEAD responds to the critical need for these leaders to step up their efforts so that we can make a more tangible impact on the challenges facing the world today".
