ACCIONA strengthens its presence in America with the construction of a wastewater treatment plant and sewer network in Trinidad and Tobago

The Ministry of Public Services of Trinidad and Tobago, through the institution Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA), has awarded a consortium headed by ACCIONA the contract for the construction of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and its network of sewers in the city of San Fernando, the second biggest on the island of Trinidad. The project, known as the ‘San Fernando complex’, will have an estimated duration of three years and a budget of 102 million US dollars (around 80 million euros).

ACCIONA Agua (70%) - in a consortium with the Atlatec group (30%) – will carry out the design, construction and start-up of the treatment plant and its operation and maintenance for one year.

The plant, with a treatment capacity of 45 ML/day, will service a population of 111,600. The facility will have 16.3 kilometers of sewers, 12.5 of them in the form of micro-tunnels, with 11,964 service connections and 7 pumping stations with flow rates of 7 l/s to 203 l/s. The project also includes the dismantling and redevelopment of pumping stations and the existing wastewater treatment plant.

It will be financed through the Inter-American Development Bank and is ACCIONA Agua’s first contract in Trinidad and Tobago, a country located north-west of Venezuela and south of Grenada (Lesser Antilles).

ACCIONA Agua already has a total of 12 treatment plants in Latin America, located in Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, Brazil, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic and Colombia, plus 3 desalination plants in Chile, Venezuela and Peru. ACCIONA Agua is also working with Atlatec on the Atotonilco project, the biggest wastewater treatment plant in the world, presently under construction in Mexico.
