ACCIONA has been awarded a contract to supply power to all the desalination and water treatment plants and other installations managed by the publicly-owned company Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas (Acuamed). The contract is for one year from July 2011 for an estimated 24.1 million euros.
Under the contract ACCIONA will supply electricity through its subsidiary ACCIONA Green Energy Developments to Acuamed's desalination and water treatment plants, pumping stations, water transport and distribution networks and offices -up to 102 points of supply- located in the Spanish provinces of Castellón, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Albacete, Almería, Málaga and Madrid.
Among the biggest infrastructures affected by the contract are the desalination plants at Carboneras and Bajo Almanzora (Almería), Torrevieja (Alicante), Aguilas and Valdelentisco (Murcia), and also the denitrification facility at La Eliana (Valencia) and Acuamed's head offices in Madrid.
100% of the power produced by ACCIONA, estimated at around 295 million kWh over the period, will come from renewable sources with certificates of origin issued by the Spanish National Energy Commission (CNE). This aspect was considered positively among the evaluation parameters of the offers that were presented for the tender.
ACCIONA has also fulfilled the demand flexibility requirements laid down by Acuamed. This will allow the company to achieve major savings in energy costs by using the capacity of a large part of the infrastructures it manages -such as the desalination plants- to modulate its consumption and transfer it to hours in the day when the electricity price on the market is lower.
Through this contract ACCIONA has strengthened its marketing business for the supply of 100% renewable energy to end customers. It had already finalized contracts with other leading companies in the field of public infrastructures and services, the most outstanding being the one signed with ADIF, under which ACCIONA will power a significant part of rail transport in Spain in 2012. This contract includes the high-speed train (AVE) lines between Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valladolid, the commuter train networks of Madrid and Barcelona and other long-distance lines, representing over 70% of the supply contracted by ADIF for 2012.
The marketing of energy to big customers is an area through which ACCIONA -a global leader in the development, construction, exploitation and operation of renewable energy installations- is completing its presence throughout the value chain of the energy sector.
