With a budget of 24.9 million euros, the new contract envisages a 27% increase over the energy supplied in the previous year.

It covers the delivery of 374 million kWh of renewable origin to all Acuamed's hydropower infrastructures and offices from July 2012 to June 2013.

For the second year running ACCIONA has been awarded the contract for the supply of electricity to all the desalination/water treatment plants and other installations managed by the publicly-owned company Aguas de la Cuencas Mediterráneas (Acuamed). The contract is for one year from July 2012, with an estimated budget of 24.9 million euros.

As a result of the award, ACCIONA will guarantee the supply of electricity to all Acuamed's infrastructures through its subsidiary ACCIONA Green Energy Developments. This includes the desalination/water treatment plants and transport and distribution infrastructures -either in service or at an advanced stage of execution that will enter service during the contract period- and the company's offices in Madrid (head office), Valencia, Murcia, Almeria, Malaga and Tarragona. Acuamed belongs to the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

The contract covers around 150 supply points with a total installed capacity of 227 megawatts (MW) and an estimated annual consumption of 374 gigawatt-hours (GWh). This represents an increase of around 27% on the consumption estimated for the previous contract.

100% renewable electricity

Among the major infrastructures covered by this contract are the desalination plants at Carboneras and Bajo Almanzora (Almeria), Torrevieja (Alicante), Águilas and Valdelentisco (Murcia), together with the denitrification plant at La Eliana (Valencia) and Acuamed's head offices in Madrid.

100% of the energy contracted to ACCIONA will come from renewable energy sources, with guarantee of origin certificates issued by the Spanish National Energy Commission (CNE). This aspect was positively considered during the evaluation of the offers presented in the tender.

ACCIONA also fulfills Acuamed's requirements in terms of flexibility of demand. This will enable the management company to achieve considerable savings in the cost of the energy, making use of the capacity of many of the infrastructures it manages -such as the desalination plants- to modulate consumption and transfer it to times in the day when the price of electricity in the electric power market is lower.

Other major contracts

With this award, ACCIONA continues to strengthen its business of marketing 100% renewable energy to end customers. These include large publicly-owned companies in the field of infrastructures and public services, the most notable being ADIF; ACCIONA now supplies clean energy for over 70% of rail traffic in Spain, including the High-Speed Train (AVE) lines between Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and Valladolid, the commuter train networks of Madrid and Barcelona and other long-distance lines.

Other customers of ACCIONA in this field are Banco Santander, Aena, Telefónica, Metro de Madrid, Roca, Tetrapak, Grupo Corío, APM Terminals and the Prado Museum.

The marketing of energy to large customers is a business area that enables ACCIONA -a leading world company in the development, construction, exploitation and operation of renewable energy facilities- to complete its presence throughout the value chain of the energy sector.
