ACCIONA celebrates World Environment Day

06/04/2013

Today, 5 June, is World Environment Day, an event recognized by the United Nations, and this year's theme is "Think. Eat. Save".

ACCIONA marks the occasion and, over the coming weeks, it will give its employees details of the Company's commitment to the environment.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), each year tons of food is wasted worldwide. This means that all the resources used to produce this food are wasted as well. When food is thrown away, all of the emissions of gases produced during the production process will have served no purpose at all. Moreover, food production across the planet is one of the main activities giving rise to the loss of biodiversity and land-use change.

The fight on climate change, the sustainable use of natural resources and efforts to protect biodiversity are the main pillars on which ACCIONA's environment strategy rests.

ACCIONA avoids 17 times more carbon emissions than it generates

In 2012, ACCIONA's commitment to renewable energies helped avoid 14 million metric tons of carbon emissions, the equivalent of the annual CO2 emissions of 80% of Spanish households; in addition, the Company's activities generated one million metric tons less carbon emissions.

In the same period, the Company, true as always to its vocation as a bellwether in environmental protection, also encouraged initiatives designed to reduce and offset its carbon footprint.
But the Company's environmental performance doesn't stop there:

  • 42% of ACCIONA revenues and 82% of EBITDA come from so-called green economy activities; in fact, the Company is one of Europe's green economy leaders.
  • ACCIONA has specific Environment, Climate Change and Biodiversity policies in place.
  • The Company has an Environment & Quality Committee and an Expert Panel on the Environment & Biodiversity.

ACCIONA has declared June "Environment Month" and the Company will be keeping employees up-to-date on the special activities that the Company has planned, as well as key environment performance facts and figures.
