Waste Water Treatment Plant in Sopuerta, Vizcaya, Spain

The Bilbao-Bizkaia Water Utility (CABB) has awarded ACCIONA Agua (in a consortium with the local company Gaimaz) the contract for the design, construction and start-up of the variant of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) at Sopuerta in Bizkaia, to provide a service to more than 3,700 inhabitants. The construction timescale is 25 months and the budget for the project is 3.56 million euros.

This WWTP will have capacity to treat 800 m3/day for a population of 2,500, and it will later be extended to 1,145 m3/day, covering a population of just over 3,700. The new treatment plant will include, among other features, a prolonged aeration process with biological elimination of nitrogen and phosphorous.

ACCIONA has designed and constructed around ten treatment plants in the Basque Country – among them, those at Aduna,  Apraitz (Elgoibar), Alto Oria (Legarreta), Ondarroa and Bergara – with a flow rate of around 200,000 cubic meters/day, providing a service to an equivalent population of more than 300,000. The company also operates and maintains another eight, treating almost 23,000 cubic meters/day, including the plants at Munguía and Gorliz.
