The UN's Sustainable Energy for all decade (2014-24) in Latin America and The Caribbean

03/23/2015

ACCIONA and more than 500 representatives of governments, civil society, the private sector and international organizations from throughout Latin America and the Caribbean met in October in Santiago de Chile to launch the United Nations’ Sustainable Energy for All Decade (2014-2024) in the region.

The key aspects of the initiative are as follows:

1. The first two years of the Decade will concentrate on Energy and Women’s and Children’s Health. Worldwide 80 million people don’t have a safe, clean place to cook in, which has profound consequences for their health, especially women and children.

2. This is a unique opportunity to combine efforts with a common objective: eradicate poverty and bring about sustainable development and global prosperity.

3. The transition to sustainable energy for all is possible in Latin America and the Caribbean. Recent innovations and development have made new and renewable energies an available and accessible reality. This can help to bring a greater portfolio of energy products to the market and build more stable economies, while improving the security of supply, guaranteeing fairness and helping to stop climate change. Local energy solutions in small networks, or independent of a grid, will reach 30 million people without access to electricity. These are mainly inhabitants of rural areas which are unconnected to a grid.

4. Energy efficiency has great potential for generating economic, social and environmental benefits in the region. Clear leadership is needed, as well as new associations, planning and financing to ensure the target of sustainable energy for all by 2030 is achieved.

5. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is hosting the regional Sustainable Energy for All grouping on the American continent and supporting the implementation of the initiative in the region by offering a versatile space where members can consult and interact with experts from all over the world.

ALTHOUGH LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN HAVE THE HIGHEST RATE OF ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD, 95%, 30 MILLION PEOPLE ARE STILL LIVING WITHOUT A SUPPLY

Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) is a UN and World Bank initiative in which ACCIONA was one of the first companies to join, back in September 2011. ACCIONA’s Chairman, since his appointment in April 2013, is the only Spanish representative on the SE4ALL Advisory Board. The initiative seeks to provide universal access to electricity, 30% of energy from renewable sources, and a 40% improvement in energy efficiency.
