- Bokpoort Concentrating Solar Power Plant
ACCIONA Industrial has been present in South Africa since 2013, developing renewable energy projects. ACCIONA Industrial is currently part of the joint venture that is carrying out an EPC contract for the Bokpoort Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plant in Northern Cape (South Africa). Completion is planned for December 2015. The plant has a gross installed capacity of 55 MW with two thermal energy storage (TES) tanks with a diameter of 36/40 meters and a height of 18 meters. They contain molten salt that provides 9.3 hours of operation (1,300 MWht), using cylindrical-parabolic technology with 180 SENERtrough loops, 150 meters of collectors and a Siemens turbine. The civil works involved 600,000 m3 of earthworks, 9,000 foundations and 200,000 welding inches. Bokpoort is the second CSP plant developed by ACCIONA Industrial outside Spain, the other one being the 160 MW Ouarzazate plant in Morroco. ACCIONA Industrial’s commitment to the development of renewables in South Africa was recently rewarded when the consortium it belongs to was awarded preferred bidder status for the EPC contract for the future Kathu CSP plant, with a capacity of 100 MW.
